my second and last antarctic winter comes to an end tomorrow, and with the
first dash-7 aircraft of the summer comes fresh fruit, eggs (the powdered
variety is odd, to put it mildly...), some letters, some new faces, plenty
of management, and the end of 7 months of physical isolation from the
world.
we can faintly hear the sound of the world's capitalist economic structures disintegrating, but it's very hard to comprehend that news when surrounded as we are by ice, rock, desolation, and a few penguinos. in our last few weeks the weather has either been horrendous (80%) or beautiful - one particularly stunning saturday a whole lot of us took 2 RIBs out to Lagoon Island about 5kms away to have a look at the pupping / pupped Weddell seals... The rest of the pics chart some the work ive been doing in recent weeks on my guitar project - perhaps the only guitar ever made in antarctica?

| al pilots the other RIB towards a large grounded berg between anchorage and lagoon - when we got up close, the water was so incredibly clear that we could see the whole berg through the glassy surface which was amazing. | |

| above, the guitar on the 12th of october after a day of sanding. i've been temporarily relocated to my office until the start of summer inspections are carried out in the carpenters workshop - i'll need to wait until after that to get started working on the bridge and a few other construction bits which are lefrt to be done. rob | |
