we have recently been enjoying some lovely weather after a hefty dump of snow, the first decent one of winter.  myself and matt attempted to do some work at our local automatic weather station which is about 3km from the base, but the skiidoo was seriously struggling through deep powder whilst trying to pull a sledge of equipment - we made it to the caboose and took advantage of the nice soft landing to do the only sensible thing in such circumstances, while we waited for the skidoo to cool down...  (photos by matt balmer)

at the moment, work on my guitar is mostly wood preparation.  i have glued some boards together for the back (indian rosewood, the dark brown/ purple wood below) and the soundboard, or front (sitka spruce, below).  i have also been slowly preparing the rosewood for the sides with a plane (bottom picture).  The idea is to get them evenly thinned until they get to the correct thickness which is different for each piece but is close to 2.5 mm...  once this is done i'll be able to get onto the more interesting bits.  the wood is really beautiful though, and gives me a good feeling about the whole thing...

ok, first off, i know it has been ages since the last update and i will endeavour to make such a delay unusual in future.  since my last update quite a bit has happened, not least of was the departure of the james clark ross, and with it the loss of 22 people, among them friends who will be missed...

so my second winter season has begun, and the weather has responded by being shockingly poor for the last 3 weeks, only breaking today after dumping a foot of snow and large drifts all over the shop.  so a quick blog update then i'm going to fit in an hour and a half of skiing before dinner.

photos-wise, i am poorly equipped, mostly because the elements have been most unhelpful.  but here are a couple of pics that i nabbed from roger stillwell's blog which are of me playing the guitar at sky blu during the summer, and one from my winter trip with roger at the top of one of our ski descents.  also a few shots from today...

i have started on the proper wortk of my guitar too, so i'll be posting updates on that as i go along too.
