Wind Turbine Diary
12th June
Hola! I learnt that yesterday. It means hello in spanish. So, lots has been happening on the turbine, but not much has been documented over the last week, so here are some updates: The yaw bearing (the main frame of the machine) has been welded up, drilled in the right places to take the bearing hub (the bit that turns) and the studs for securing the stator. This was a lot harder than i had imagined because the thing is a funny shape and getting under a drill and then slowly enlarging the holes up to the required diameter took 3 hours. Just to drill 4 holes... In the end i had to make the stub of the axle thinner by turning it down in the lathe because i couldn't get the hole for it any bigger. Today i painted the yaw bearing and here it is, looking sweet:
The stator bolts on to the three holes in the picture above, such that the red wires come out the back (away from you, in the above picture)
I also started painted the magnet rotors and the stator:
Going back to do more work in the afternoon. Also, I screwed the blades together to make the distinctive turbine blade assembly, but it still needs a few more holes drilled and a bit more varnishing done before final assembly... Back again, and have done more painting and varnishing this afternoon, including on the blade assembly which is almost finished. This disk sitting to the left clamps down onto the top of the blades and this is the master disk, which will meet with the front magnet rotor:
I also put a coat of paint on the tailpipe, to which will be fixed the tail vane, which will point the turbine into the wind, and also turn it away from very high winds to prevent damage (the furling system):
It's a bit of a race against time now to get it done as much as possible before heading down south on saturday, but i think i can at least assemble the alternator which will be very satisfying!!
